The number on the pad behind the distributor is the SERIAL #, not the CASTING # (big diff). Someone had just posted a new tip on the Stovebolt page on I.D.ing a 235 or 261 engine by the serial #. Also, read the short article about the 261' they have. Learned something new myself; from '58 on, the 261' had a screw-on oil filter.

These motors all have the tall side plate and different casting number appear all the time, this photo should help. Now I can't say this number is on ALL High Torques as I personally have not seen every Chevy motor that was ever built. ( Editor's Note: I have a '49 babbitted 235 big truck motor in my '49 1-ton and although the pan has the raised pad as in Jim's photos, it does not have any numbers stamped in it. Of course, I can't guarantee that my pan is original to the motor.

Water pump/generator alignments depend on each other. Install the water pump first. If your 235 wore the long water pump pulley, DO NOT BEGIN HACKING ON THE RADIATOR CORE SUPPORT and/or LATCH PANEL! Patrick's has the short pump and special pulley for only $109.95. This allows for the use of the larger, late model fan, which provides better cooling. (Note: it is not correct to press the early 216 pulley onto the late water pump, since this spins the impeller approximately 190% of design speed, and may even cavitate the water, causing overheating. In addition, the old back-woods method can literally be dangerous, since it requires using the 216 'low speed' fan which is turned far beyond its design safety.) 7.
The head with the casting number ending with 848 is the best one to use with either block; it has the smallest combustion chamber. I mention the 261 because it is no more expensive to build than a 235. With a mild overbore, you can have a 270' six, which is a 15% increase in cubes for no real extra effort. The only thing you give up is hydraulic lifters. Most of the later 261's had a head with the casting number ending with 850. If you think you have a 261, look in front of the starter for two small raised lines (Army Captain's bars) on the passenger side.
