Rated 4 out of 5 by Steve from Excellent product I needed this adapter to connect a (home automation device) CM11A X10 serial interface to my Vista machine which had no serial ports. This works flawlessly and I felt was purcased for a fair price. The only negative comment I can make is that it did not come with software drivers.

I've found the prolific ones to be generaly unreliable and extremely picky about drivers - specific version for specific OS/SP levles etc and in general a real PITA. FTDI adapters OTOH, appears to be very stable and offers more options in their driver and that is what I use. Short of the manufacturer telling you which chip it uses, a quick way to tell the difference is the FTDI adapters generally have activiy LEDs but the Prolific adapters don't. These new converters can be recognised by the third character of the serial number, which is printed on the label on the back of the converter. This serial number starts with 'Z3' or 'Z8'.
