Even the military in all its guidelines has yet to solidify a real documentation strategy that is actually understandable and possible to implement. In theory, I want a google map that has every one of my sites where I can zoom on each building and get a floor plan and list the com rooms and zoom into the comm rooms and see the switches and then zoom to the ports and see the devices connected to it. Stuff like that is possible but improbable to actually implement. Stuff like mapping endpoints to jack ports to patchpannel location to switchports is near impossible in a multiple location enviornment when you dont have physical control over who changes what. Not if the info you are looking for is a traffic flow/path that goes through a multitiered firewall solution, passing 5 vrouters and perhaps 6 zones all made up in a design and naming scheme that most sane persons would shoot themselves before even trying to think about. And yes, its just two juniper ssg firewalls that gives rise to 6+ zones you have to traverse for a single path flow path through those two. You have a starting ip, but traveling the path through the firewall requires you to actually look at the routing tables because the routing for the same network travel different paths depending on which vrouter you are in or comming in to/from. I can just say I hate it, but the guy in charge for that customer wants it that way because thats whats works for him.
