Beginning with Windows 10, the secdrv service can not be run or installed on a system so any older games that use these programs will no longer work. Additionally, with the September 2015 Windows Security Update KB3086255, the service has also been disabled on older Windows OSs (Vista, 7, 8, 8.1), causing these games to no longer run on these systems either. Options to correct this issue: 1 - The first and best option would be to download a copy of Civilization 3 without the DRM protection. Full game downloads without DRM can be found at places like and.

And just for the record, I am not particularly computer-literate either. Sorry been busy packing and moving to China. Was there a patch or a 'simple' system to over come this KB3086255? I can start and play using the exe.file.

Back in the mid-2000s, by hackers. Asked for their opinion concerning its removal from Windows 10, developers: “Safedisc DRM hasn’t been supported for a few years now, and the driver has consequently not been updated for some time. Microsoft should have migrated the existing software since Windows 8. We don’t know if that’s still possible with Windows 10 or if they simply didn’t care about it.” SafeDisc relies on the SECDRV.SYS file, which isn’t present in Windows 10, and attempts to import and run it in the new OS have failed.

NOTE: In some cases it is better to use the CD-Writer as Source CD-Reader as it is usually better able to read unreadable sectors.

As we’ve discovered, the inability to play a huge selection of retro games in Windows 10 is due to legacy restrictions with DRM, rather than Microsoft causing users problems for the hell of it. Which workaround will you be using? Tell us in the comments. Image credit: via.

System are not supported. So what can be done about this, and what is Microsoft playing? Don’t Blame Microsoft First off, it isn’t really appropriate to blame the immense technology giant on this occasion., Microsoft’s Boris Schneider-Johne explained how the decision to remove support for these retro titles is a result of making the operating system more secure. “Everything that ran in Windows 7 should also run in Windows 10.

Odd i could swear i saw 2.80 one knocking about publically, 2.90 isnt really that much different than the others, just a little bit more checking on the ccc's and so on. And yup, gotta agree about the immature blast, people have different tastes, and little girls like barbie. Methinks 'twas a loader, as well as some loaders for 2.7, but no full unwrap.

Additionally, if you already have the full game installed, then the german PC Games site has No-CD versions of Civilization III Vanilla and Conquests available. Instructions for installing the No-CD patch are.

They made some changes to encryption stuff during 2.9 if I remember correctly, made it quite different from 2.8, but nothing to worry about if you have a mini image at hand.

Supported Safedisc versions: - v2.05.30 EXE & DLL - v2.10.30 EXE - v2.30.30, v2.30.31 & v2.30.33 EXE - v2.40.10 & v2.40.11 EXE - v2.51.20 & v2.51.21 EXE - v2.60.52 EXE 'No-CD Loader' Supported Safecast versions: - v2.02.40 EXE - v2.11.10, v2.11.40 & v2.11.60 EXE - v2.11.10 DLL Maybe some other revision numbers will work too. Notes: • Only SD 2.05.30 and SC 2.11.10 protected DLL's are supported. Probably 2.40.1x protected DLL's (Il-2 Sturmovik has got one) will be supported in a future version. Maybe some other versions will be added later, but since I have never discovered protected DLL's with other versions, they don't need supported yet:) • You don't need Safedisc Analyser anymore as this tool detects the used Safedisc version for you. Coded and tested on Win 98 SE, it should work on Win95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP too.

Especially, if you're not particularly computer savy, where you could inadvertantly open yourself up to a hack. Click to expand.I got the the 'Admin privileges' message (on my Win8.1 box, with the KB**** update applied) when I tried to run a 'naked' Civilization3X.exe (for Play The World) copied from a CD, that used secdrv.sys (described in one of my posts above). Assuming that you're applying the 'official' NoCD patch from the PCGames website linked in the first post of this thread, if you're getting that same message, that strongly suggests that your computer is actually still trying to run the original (CD-requiring) Conquests.exe, rather than the NoCD-patch. So I'd ask whether you tried to open the game by double-clicking on the patch itself, or did you simply click on a pre-existing shortcut (e.g.
